We recognise that after the Second World War, people from British colonies and the Commonwealth were British subjects and entitled to live and work in the UK. At this time, Britain was in need of workers to rebuild its economy, transport systems, and newly established National Health Service. As a result, the British government welcomed laborers from across the Commonwealth.
As our circumstances changed, so did those entitlements, including the prioritisation of European Community member state citizens over Commonwealth citizens in preparation for the UK joining the EEC in 1973.
