Many people are aware of the dark money that funds pressure groups and buys influence in British politics, but the power of money to influence our democracy has just escalated to a new level.
Trump and the MAGA movement no longer view Europe an an ally, but an enemy to be defeated. The Trump administration is using the pretext of national security to cultivate resistance to the EU. A senior Reform UK figure has told the FT that Trump’s administration is “on a crusade to save Europe.”
Trump has handed the State Department a “slush fund to get MAGA-style things going in various places” with the explicit goal of funding European organisations to undermine government policies.
A NATO member state funding subversion against another member is in direct violation of the intentions and the spirit of the organisation.
Can we now view the USA as anything other than an enemy of our democracy?
