Sky News ‘UK has been colonised by immigrants’, says INEOS boss and Man Utd co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe

Ratcliffe is promoting the idea that all immigrants are on benefits, but that’s far from being the case. Many organisations, not least Manchester United recruit the best talent from around the world and pay them for their skills.

That’s why we have entry requirements for the Health and Care Worker Visa, Standard Skilled Workers and occupations under the Temporary Shortage List (eg Technical, Construction, Digital/IT, Creative).

Of course we need to ensure our education and training is world class (is it?) but when you can’t fill vacancies with home grown talent, who is Ratcliffe to say you can’t recruit from overseas?

… and it’s misleading to suggest that we have 9 million immigrants claiming benefits. We can have a discussion about the 1.6 million foreign nationals on benefits, but Ratcliffe is clearly being inflammatory by saying the UK has been colonised by immigrants.

Unfortunately the media are only too happy to report extreme opinions without facts or context. It gets people angry, and anger fuels engagement or clicks.

Ratcliffe has since apologised, but he should know better
